No power outlet, no compressor, no workshop — and still a flat tyre to change. It is more common than you think: farms, off-grid cabins, trailheads, overlanding trips and roadside breakdowns all put you far from mains power. Here is how to change a tyre without electricity, the right way.
What you need
- A manual tyre changer (the LCTX 3rd Gen uses leverage, not power)
- Tyre mounting paste and a valve tool
- A hand or foot pump, or a CO₂ inflator, to re-seat the bead
- Gloves and eye protection
Step 1 — Break the bead
Fully deflate the tyre by removing the valve core. Position the bead-breaker against the tyre where it meets the rim and work the lever — progressive leverage does the hard part, popping the bead loose on both sides.
Step 2 — Demount the tyre
Fit the duck head at the rim edge, hook the tyre iron under the bead and rotate. The rounded head glides along the rim so alloys stay scratch-free. Work all the way around, then lift the tyre off.
Step 3 — Mount the new tyre
Paste both beads, drop the tyre over the rim and use the mount head to lever the upper bead into place. Take your time and keep the lower bead in the drop-centre to make it easy.
Step 4 — Seat and inflate
Refit the valve core and inflate steadily. Listen for the two ‘pop’ sounds as the beads seat, then set the pressure to your vehicle’s placard value.
